Featured Cruelty-Free Company: Urban Decay

Proving that you can have a killer look without killing animals, Urban Decay has become the source for makeup that’s “[P]retty. Maybe a little twisted. But never prissy” and—best of all—never tested on animals.

Roaring onto the scene in 1996 with its infamous “Does Pink Make You Puke?” slogan, Urban Decay has changed the way that people think about cosmetics, with out-there colors such as Roach, Smog, Rust, Oil Slick, and Acid Rain. Urban Decay cosmetics have been spotted on the lips, eyes, and cheeks of rock stars and other celebrities and have been featured in movies and magazines and on fashion-show runways.

This trend-setting company is changing the way that its customers shop for makeup too. Items marked with the purple paw print of Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir’s dog, Marley, are entirely vegan—free of any animal-derived ingredients. More purple paws are popping up every day, as Urban Decay busily collaborates with its laboratories to swap animal ingredients for plant-derived alternatives. All of Urban Decay’s stuff is fabulous, but one product that no makeup kit should be without are Good Karma Cruelty-Free Brushes, which are made of super-soft Taklon, a synthetic fiber that is a cruelty-free alternative to the sable and squirrel fur that some brushes are still made from.

PETA is tickled pink—or should we say, tickled Rust—to honor Urban Decay as a cruelty-free company.
